The classy black tea classic delights with a hint of citrus freshness, which it owes to the organically cultivated bergamot.
Earl Gray is a tea blend that originally consisted exclusively of Chinese teas and was slightly flavored with the fine, fragrant, bitter oil of bergamot.
The tea was named after Charles Gray, 2nd Earl Gray (1764-1845). In 1833, the British Prime Minister lifted the East India Company's price monopoly in tea trade with China. However, tea is not an actual invention of this Earl Gray. Legend has it that during a storm on the crossing, the cargo was thrown into confusion and bergamot oil poured onto the tea bales. Lord Gray asked for the damage when the ship arrived in London and decided to first taste the tea and then decide whether the cargo needed to be destroyed. However, the tea was so well received by friends and acquaintances that the Earl decided to sell the “flavored” tea.
An Earl Gray is no longer only mixed from Chinese teas, but also from Indian varieties and goes well with lightly salty dishes and small snacks.
Good to know...
An Earl Gray should be brewed at a water temperature of 95-98 ° C (leave the water in the kettle for a short while and wait until it no longer boils).
Let it steep for 2 - 3 minutes
